MERKICHIA, IRAQ, [9/9/23] — In light of the recent bombing in the village of Merkichia, reportedly a result of the ongoing conflict between Turkey and the PKK, the global community is reminded of the innocent lives caught amidst political crossfires. Tragically, Merkichia's vital watering system was critically damaged, directly impacting the livelihood of its residents.

In a swift response, the Etuti Institute teamed up with Nineveh Rising and quickly organized a fundraiser, garnering support from renowned businessmen like Martin Khemmoro and Attorney Joseph Arabbo. The collective efforts have successfully raised the required amount to replace the damaged pipes, ensuring the village can swiftly begin the restoration process and regain access to a fundamental resource, water.

“People like us have to stop what we’re doing in the middle of our days & donate to rapidly resolve issues. There was a loss of water to a village who had no interest, awareness, or involvement in the firing of weapons from Turkey on their villages.”

Both organizations urge other entities, governments, and global leaders to recognize the gravity of these events and work towards establishing a peaceful and sustainable solution.

Aid in Merkichia is a testament to the resilience of our people and the power of the unity of the Chaldean Assyrian Syriac people.

“Nineveh rising along with its small group of patriot donors regularly tend to issues such as this with no acknowledgement or support by major organizations, or governments, nor the Kurdistan Regional Government," Khemmoro said.

"Meanwhile the profits from oil, gas, & other minerals received by the KRG from indigenous Assyrian & Chaldean lands & villages, are kept by the KRG in full," Khemmoro continued.

“We expect a statement regarding this by the Kurdistan Regional government and reimbursement for all costs associated with repairing the damage to the village's water system, property, loss of business & crops.”
