Despite ongoing Turkish airstrikes, Indigenous Assyrians are steadfast in their determination to rebuild and thrive in their ancestral lands.
On August 21, 2023, the village of Merkachia endured bombing by Turkish forces amid conflicts with the PKK. This resulted in severe damage to Merkachia's vital watering system, directly impacting the livelihoods of its residents. The destruction encompassed 7 large apple orchards and rendered 350 meters of crucial watering pipes unusable.
In a swift and unified response, the @etuti_institute and @ninevehrising mobilized an internal fundraising initiative. With generous contributions from prominent individuals such as Martin Khemmoro, Attorney Joseph Arabbo, and Joey Benny, the initiative swiftly raised the necessary funds to replace the damaged pipes. This effort ensures that Merkachia can promptly commence its restoration process, thereby restoring access to a fundamental resource: water.
Both organizations emphatically call upon governments, entities, and global leaders to acknowledge the seriousness of these recurring attacks. They advocate for concerted efforts towards establishing lasting peace and sustainable solutions in the region.
